China Youths Swap City Dreams for Country Living as Jobs Crisis Mounts

“Back when I graduated in 2014, even an average student such as myself, without experience, could get multiple offers and find work at a good company,” said Gong. “It’s something that was given to me by the times, and unimaginable now.”

“Whenever I get anxious and sad about my next step, I would tell myself: let’s lie flat a bit and just focus on the work now,” said Chen, referring to a youth social movement to opt out of the rat race.

Young Chinese Women Are Defying the Communist Party

The Communist Party has faced many opponents and dissenters in its decades of rule, quickly silencing and consigning them to oblivion. In the nation’s young women, the party’s male leaders may now be facing their most implacable challengers yet.

The Bones Remember

In this narrative, the Communist Party’s path to power was propelled by history; its victory was preordained.

At a time when the battle over history rages in autocracies and democracies alike, how we remember the past is what makes us human

With steps so light they can take flight, the living learn to walk underground. The bones of their ancestors speak to the transience of state authority, and are a buried record of oppression and resistance. In their presence, future generations find their genealogy of hope and survival.

Wong, Edward. 2024. At the Edge of Empire: A Family’s Reckoning with China. New York: Viking. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/602734/at-the-edge-of-empire-by-edward-wong/9781984877406/

A dual narrative that tells the story of modern China by braiding an intergenerational family memoir with first-person contemporary reporting by the former New York Times Beijing bureau chief.

The son of two Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, Edward Wong grew up around Washington, DC; his father, a former soldier in the People’s Liberation Army under Mao, worked in Chinese restaurants and rarely spoke about his native land. Yook Kearn Wong came of age during the Japanese occupation in World War II, then fell under the spell of Mao’s promise of a new, equitable China, spending harsh years with the Chinese army in northern China and in Xinjiang, along the Central Asian frontier. In 1962, disillusioned with Mao’s brutal policies, he fled to Hong Kong and eventually went to America.

When Edward Wong moved to Beijing as a correspondent for The New York Times in 2008, it gave him a rare opportunity to investigate his father’s mysterious past, while also assessing for himself the dream of a resurgent China that his father once held, then abandoned. He had a front-row seat as the world’s two superpowers met at a crossroads. And the years of his tenure saw China’s economic boom and geopolitical expansion, as well as the darker currents of nationalism and ethnic repression and the autocratic rise of President Xi Jinping.

As a son considering his father’s life and his own time in China, Wong provides an epic, moving chronicle of a family and a nation, one that spans more than 80 years and gives insight into a new authoritarian age in China that is transforming the world. It is the essential work for understanding the sweep and direction of modern China.

Make Sense of Complex Topics With Alan Chan, Co-Founder of Heptabase

Our vision at Heptabase is to create a world where anyone can effectively establish a deep understanding of anything.

Everything built on top of this system should have the inherent capabilities to empower people to effectively create a deep understanding of anything they’re learning and researching.

When building Heptabase, there are some mental models and guiding principles that I have been using since the very beginning.

The first mental model is called “The Knowledge Lifecycle”, which consists of five parts: exploring, collecting, thinking, creating, and sharing.

The second mental model is system layering. The way I abstract the system we’re building is that there will be multiple independent layers, each focusing on one unique job.

The most important principle in our company is that we want to ensure that everything we’re building is aligned with our ultimate goal of helping people acquire and establish a deep understanding of the things they care about.

The second principle is that we want the product to be as friendly and intuitive as possible.

I want Heptabase to eventually become a system where people can build and launch their own “meta-apps” on top of it.

The “aha” moment of Heptabase is that you gradually accumulate more and more cards from more and more sources, and you’ll find the sense-making process on the whiteboard very smooth.
